How do you modernise a heating system with zero-emission technology while keeping a cherished 1950s Rayburn as part of the home? When a Nottinghamshire homeowner faced this exact challenge, Selby Heating needed a thermal store that could bridge decades of heating technology. The solution required a precisely manufactured thermal store with custom sizing to make it all work seamlessly.
About Selby Plumbing and Heating
Tom Selby began working in the family business, Julian Selby Heating, Plumbing and Gas. Over two decades later, he has gained a wealth of experience in domestic and commercial plumbing, heating and gas installations.
Passionate about renewable heating and cooling technologies, Tom went on to create Selby Heating (Nottingham) Limited to focus on low-carbon, energy-efficient solutions. Tom and his father still work alongside each other on many projects.
The Challenge
A customer of Selby Heating had an older heating setup consisting of a Parkray Multi-Fuel back boiler and a 1950s coal-fired Rayburn. The latter had traditionally supplied hot water to the home.
On the advice of Adam Litchfield of Tepeo Boilers, the customer decided to replace the back boiler with Tepeo Zero Emission Boiler (ZEB). This would be a modern, compact, and low-carbon upgrade.
However, the Tepeo ZEB was purely installed for space heating, so a solution was required for the supply of domestic hot water. The customer wanted to retain the Rayburn as a feature of the home, and integrate it into the new system. This item had become an admired feature of the family home, so it was requested to be included in the new heating system.

The Solution
Selby Heating turned to Newark Cylinders to manufacture a bespoke 200L Stainless Steel Vented Thermal Store. Having used the nearby manufacturer in the past, Tom was confident that Newark Cylinders could efficiently produce a quality product that met the system design’s needs.
“We had a couple of phone calls with the team there, and a couple of days later, it was ready to be delivered two days before the date we were originally told,” Tom Selby explains.
In addition to the Thermal Store, Newark Cylinders manufactured a 25L copper Feed & Expansion (F&E) tank, which would be in the property’s loft space.
The Installation
The Thermal Store was manufactured to be 1400x450mm, with custom connection points. This enabled Selby Heating to minimise material use, labour time, or extra joinery work. While for the homeowner, it didn’t mean she didn’t have to do any unwanted decorating.
The pressure and temperature relief valves (TPRV) were fitted to the heating system and the hot water system. Hotun®’s were fitted along with their detection unit, which gives an audible alarm if/when water passes through the hotun® tundish. The hotun® itself provides a visual aid for water, but as this was an elderly customer, it was perfect for the audible detection unit. If/when an issue arises, the customer will immediately know there’s an issue and to call the installer. Tom is a Brand Ambassador for hotun® and includes them on all installations.
The thoughtful sizing and design made the installation process smooth and efficient.
The Result
With the combination of Newark Cylinder’s bespoke Thermal Store and the Tepeo ZEB, the customer’s hot water system now has a much better flow rate, with a balanced mains cold. The temperature control of the hot water has also been improved.
Tom says the customer was so happy with the system, the cylinder and the pipework, that “she didn’t even want the doors going back on”. Previously, the Parkray Multi-Fuel back boiler was hidden away behind a door.

Every heating system is different.
